JEWL North Stars Fall Short at Provincials, Finish Season Among Ontario’s Elite
The Owen Sound North Stars Creative Playgrounds JEWL women’s lacrosse team won 2 huge round robin games against Kitchener-Waterloo and Kawartha to punch their ticket to the Provincial Championships in Peterborough but finished just off the podium after dropping both games at the tournament this past weekend.
Owen Sound fell 10–5 to the Halton Hills Bulldogs in Friday’s semifinal before losing 12–8 to Kawartha in Saturday’s bronze medal match.
The bronze medal game started with promise, as the North Stars came out firing, dominating the opening quarter and jumping out to a 5-2 lead. The final 45 minutes were all Kawartha who seized momentum, controlled the draw circle and outscored Owen Sound 10-3 the rest of the way.
Owen Sound’s hopes of competing for the gold medal were dashed on Friday by Halton Hills. The North Stars conceded two goals in the first six minutes but outstanding play by goalie Mykah Harris locked things down through the remainder of the opening quarter and the score would remain 2-0 after 15 minutes. Halton Hills maintained control throughout the game stretching the lead to three goals at the half, four goals at the end of the third quarter, and ultimately the 10-5 win.
Brooklyn Doyle led the Owen Sound attack with five goals over the two games. Laine Nissen and London Doyle scored twice each, while Taryn Weppler, Camryn Laycock, and Bree Wilkins each added singles.
Despite the tough finish, Owen Sound capped off an excellent playoff tournament as the fourth-ranked team in the Junior Women’s Elite League—the highest level of women’s lacrosse in Ontario.
